After harvesting the coconuts and separating the shells, the shells undergo an initial cleaning process to remove any remaining impurities, dust, or foreign materials. Next, the coconut shells are subjected to carbonization, a high-temperature process where the shells are heated in a controlled environment with limited oxygen. This process occurs in a specialized kiln, converts the carbon-rich coconut shells into char, a porous, blackened substance that forms the base for activated carbon. After carbonization, the char is activated through a second process typically involves exposing the char to steam at very high temperatures (700–1000°C) in an activation kiln. This creates millions of tiny pores on the surface of the carbon particles, vastly increasing their surface area and enhancing their ability to adsorb various substances.
For granulated activated carbon, the activated char is crushed and then sieved to achieve the desired granular size, and powdered activated carbon, on the other hand, is further ground to a fine powder. Both forms of activated carbon are then carefully screened to remove any oversized particles or impurities and the final products are packaged into bags, drums, or bulk containers, depending on the intended application.
